Performance Powertrains

Performance Powertrains

Our Performance Powertrains online module will take place on 1 June 2024.

Discover the techniques used to maximise the efficiency of combustion, hybrid and electric powertrains and understand how control systems are used to implement these strategies effectively.

The tutors for the 2024 module will be announced soon.

Previous tutors and sessions included:

Albert Ruiz Gracia - Trackside energy management engineer

Albert's motorsport career started in my MSc in Motorsport Mechatronics at Cranfield University. After that, he started as a junior performance and strategy engineer in FE team Rokit Venturi Racing (Maseratti as of this season). He then moved to Andretti FE. Currently, Albert's role is a Trackside energy management engineer which, among other things, focus in optimizing energy consumption and efficiency by working closely with the drivers.

Xtrac engineers

Established in 1984, Xtrac has become recognised as the worldwide leader in the design and manufacture of transmission systems supporting a wide client base covering top level Motorsport and High Performance Automotive. Attendees will hear from Xtrac engineers and learn all about transmissions that are important in the Performance Powertrain.

Module Programme*:

Race Engine development
Insight and hints and tips on how to develop a successful high performance race engine.

Formula E powertrain
Understand the challenges of racing an electric powertrain and how to push its limits of performance. You’ll also find out how teams manage energy regen and deployment strategies throughout a lap.

Transmissions
You will Understand gear theory and define gear ratios, as well as hybrid and electric transmission layouts. You'll discover transmissions and differentials as well as types, preload and lubrication.

*Please note these are the sessions are subject to change.

On successful completion of the Online Module, graduates are awarded an industry recognised certificate of completion from the MIA. Performance Powertrains will take place on 1 June, via Zoom and the MIA Campus platform. The cost for this industry recognised learning opportunity is just £295*.
