Performance Powertrains

Our Performance Powertrains online module will take place on 1 June 2024.

Discover the techniques used to maximise the efficiency of combustion, hybrid and electric powertrains and understand how control systems are used to implement these strategies effectively.

Ulrich Baretzky - former Director Race Engine Development at AUDI Sport

Ulrich began his career as a Design Engineer at BMW Motorsport and was involved in F1, F2 projects as well as High Performance M3 and M5 engines. He moved to Audi where he led projects in WEC, DTM, Trans-Am, IMSA GTO, and ITC.

Daniel Blaindorfer - Team Leader - Solution Engineering Racing - AVL RACETECH

Daniel graduated from the Graz University of Technology in 2014 and has worked at AVL ever since. Over the last 7 years he has been involved in the development of AVL’s engine dyno capabilities for a variety of motorsport and automotive clients.

Aleksander Pinter - Project Manager Racing - AVL RACETECH

Aleks began his career at AVL in 2000 where he developed turbo and supercharged gasoline engines. In 2013 he joined the racing department of AVL where he supported teams in IRC, WRC, NASCAR, Formula E and Formula 1 with their powertrain development.

Andrew Cross - Chief Technical Officer - Integral Powertrain

Andrew studied Automotive Engineering at Loughborough University and after graduating in 2000, joined Integral Powertrain. In 2007, he entered the world of F1, working for Mercedes High Performance Powertrains, developing the KERS systems. He returned to Integral Powertrain in 2010 where he now oversees the company’s R&D, product activity and projects.

Module Programme*:

Race Engine development
Ulrich Baretzky will give you an insight into the lessons learnt throughout his years in motorsport. He’ll be sharing his advice, hints and tips on how to develop a successful high performance race engine. 

Formula 1 power unit
Discover the inner workings of today’s F1 power units as our expert tutors reveal how the hybrid system works together with the combustion engine. You’ll also learn about the MGU-K, MGU-H and ERS systems as well as the latest tactics engineers use to maximise power unit performance.

Engine dynos
Understand the capabilities of a variety of different types of engine dynos and the procedures involved in running an effective dyno test. You'll also find out the tricks behind utilising a dyno test to improve track performance as well as how to analyse dyno data. 

Motors and inverters
Find out the technology behind some of the most energy-efficient motors and inverters in motorsport and how these devices play an integral role in maximising performance from electric and hybrid powertrains.

On successful completion of the Online Module, graduates are awarded an industry recognised certificate of completion from the MIA. Performance Powertrains will take place on 1 June, via Zoom and the MIA Campus platform. The cost for this industry recognised learning opportunity is just £295*. This price includes exclusive technical material, the opportunity to put forward questions to the tutors, access to the webinar recording and a certificate of attendance.
