The MIA School of Race Engineering has a strong motorsport engineering community. When you join the School you become part of this community and have access to the top engineers in the world. Below you can explore all our experts who have provided their expert knowledge as tutors at either our 4-day School or online modules. 


James Knapton - Head of Vehicle Science

James Knapton has enjoyed a rich career in Formula 1, as the Head of Vehicle Science at Force India, Sauber and Manor F1 teams. Now, he works with Adrian Newey on the Aston Martin Valkyrie project in his role as Head of Vehicle Science at Red Bull Advanced Technologies. 

Ciaron Pilbeam - Chief Race Engineer

Ciaron has over 14 years experience working as a Race Engineer for 6 different F1 teams, including BAR Honda, Red Bull Racing, Lotus F1 Team, McLaren Racing, Renault Sport Racing F1 Team and now Alpine F1 Team.

Willem Toet - Senior Sales Manager

Willem Toet is a renowned aerodynamicist who has headed aero departments of 4 F1 teams including Ferarri and most recently Sauber. With over 30 years' experience in F1, Willem not only knows all the aerodynamic tricks used in racing but he's pioneered them too!

Jack Chilvers - Aerodynamicist

Jack began his F1 career at Renault as a Graduate Aerodynamicist and by 2017 became an Aerodynamicist where he focused on the front corner of the car. In 2019 Jack switched to his current role at Williams Racing.

Blake Hinsey - Senior Simulator Performance Engineer

A graduate from Oxford Brookes, Blake has been working in F1 Vehicle Dynamics and Race Engineering departments for the last 9 years. He was a Performance Engineer at Force India and then Red Bull Racing where he is now a Senior Simulator Performance Engineer.

Phil Ingram - Race Engineer

Phil is a Formula E Race Engineer for Panasonic Jaguar Racing. He has a wealth of experience, previously working as a Vehicle Dynamics engineer for Red Bull Racing, McLaren Automotive and MIRA. He will be teaching the tactics required to be successful in electric racing.

Tim Jackson - Lead WRC Development Engineer

Tim spent 6 years as a works Rally Engineer for the Ford World Rally Team, securing 2 FIA Manufacturers titles, before spearheading M-Sport's US & Europe rallycross programs. Now back in the WRC, he heads up the test and development of M-Sport Ford's WRC projects.

Tom Hodgson - Head of Customer Racing

Tom Hodgson has worked his way up the ranks at Bentley Motorsport, starting out as a technical apprentice in 2005 and is now head of customer racing. He has race engineered in many GT categories. 

Iain Gordon - Export Sales Manager

Iain has a rich experience within motorsport and aerodynamics and will give an overview of pressure scanners, probes and other aerodynamic sensors. Iain will share his experience on how F1 teams utilise these devices to measure aero data accurately and reliably.

Victoria Guppy - Data Engineer

Victoria has worked trackside for the last 10 years for F3 and BTCC race teams and joined Manor Racing F1 in 2015 as Trackside Systems Engineer. Now, she spends her weekends data engineering for BTC Racing. 

Rik Kasius - Race Engineer

“The MIA School of Race Engineering is a great platform to boost your race engineering ambitions. The course is well organised and includes a variety of in-depth content and interactive sessions. It is a privilege to help people get that little step closer to their Race Engineer aspirations."

João Ginete - Performance Engineer

João began his motorsport career as an Aerodynamicist at McLaren Racing and then Red Bull Racing, where he also helped develop the Aston Martin Valkyrie. In 2018 he started working trackside, Race Engineering in ELMS as well as European and Japanese F3, before joining Jota. 

Aditya Mhatre - Performance Engineer

Aditya worked for Cyan Racing in 2019-20 and was part of the race winning team in 2019 for the World Touring Car Championship. Aditya has also worked with drivers to analyse key performance data to improve race pace.  

Ralph Dale – Formula 3 Data Engineer

Ralph kicked off his motorsport career at Base Performance Simulators, after which he worked as a Data Engineer in GT. Now, he is a Director of his own company, where he is an F3 Data Engineer for Carlin and also a Race Engineer for several GT teams.

Geoff Dymott - Race Engineer

Geoff worked for Williams Racing for over 20 years as a Vehicle Dynamics, Race/Test Data Engineer and Senior Performance Engineer. Geoff also race engineered in F4 and Porsche Carrera Cup for Richardson Racing.

Callum Cripps - Race Driver

Callum has been involved in motorsport since he was 10 years old. He has raced in Ginetta GT5, Clio Cup, Formula Renault, GT and NASCAR. In 2019 he finished 5th in the EuroNASCAR championship with 50% podium finishes.

Craig Bremner - Senior Analyst

Craig Bremner joined the Advanced Engineering department of Xtrac in 2016. Now, he works as a Senior Analyst where he optimises motorsport transmission solutions.

Nick Upjohn – Design Engineer

After an industrial placement with Xtrac, Nick re-joined in 2018 as a Design Engineer within the motorsport department. Nick is involved with a range of racing transmission projects and also supports the BTCC.

Jason Carpenter - Trackside Engineer

Jason has spent the last 13 years working in F1. Starting off at Williams, Jason then worked as an F1 Tyre Engineer for Pirelli. Now, he manages the brake and clutch components that AP Racing supply to several F1 teams.

Ian Nash - Technical Sales

Ian joined AP Racing in 1984 and progressed to Section Leader for Design and Development of motorsport brakes and clutches. He then became Chief Engineer and is now Technical Sales and Business Development Manager.

Gemma Hatton - Course Leader

Gemma has worked trackside in BTCC, GT and as an F1 Tyre engineer for Pirelli and Manor F1. She has also been Deputy Editor of Racecar Engineering Magazine and now runs her own technical writing business.

Charlotte Phelps - Strategy Engineer

After finishing her studies, Charlotte worked at Mercedes HPP and was promoted to Strategy Engineer in 2019. She spends her free weekends Data Engineering for Barwell Motorsport, running two Lamborghini's in British GT. Charlotte now runs her own motorsport business. 

Christian Silk - Team Principal

Christian has worked for four F1 teams: Benetton, Renault, Marussia and Williams. In 2017, he switched to electric racing and became Chief Race Engineer at NIO Formula E team, where he is now Team Principal.

Gérry Hughes - Commercial Director

Gérry has worked trackside for the likes of Cosworth, Red Bull Racing, Caterham F1 and Prodrive. Most recently, he was Team Principal at NIO Formula E team before beginning his role at Swindon Powertrain. 

Jahee Campbell-Brennan - Director

After graduating with an MSc in Automotive Engineering, Jahee set up his own engineering consultancy. He has worked for several automotive companies and race teams, race engineering in Britcar and has now shifted focus to motorsport engineering full time.

Dominic Harlow - Motorsport Engineer

Dominic is part of the engineering team at the FIA who are developing F1 regulations. He has also worked for BMW in DTM, Williams F1 and Force India as well as other leading Race Engineering roles.

Sergio Rinland - Managing Director

With over 40 years experience in motorsport, Sergio has been the Chief Designer at Brabham F1, Dallara, Sauber Racing and Arrows Grand Prix. He has also worked for the likes of Benetton F1, Pankl, Tata Motors and AVL. 

Robert Sattler - Race Engineer

Robert has race engineered in GTOpen, Blancpain and WEC. Since then, Robert has worked for Mercedes in DTM for over four years, winning the 2018 championship with his driver Gary Paffett. Currently, he is a race engineer for RBM-BMW in DTM.

Craig Porley - Race Engineer

Craig has been working in motorsport for over 15 years. Alongside full time jobs at Xtrac and Red Bull Racing, he is also a Race Engineer in BTCC having previously worked for West Surrey Racing, Eurotech Racing and now MB Motorsport. 

Will Hunt - Technical Manager - Bentley Motorsport

Will started at Bentley as a Graduate in 2010 and quickly progressed to Technical Manager in 2016. His wide experience in GT endurance racing makes him the perfect tutor for teaching race strategy.

Tom Cooper - Trackside Engineer

Tom Cooper has worked in motorsport since 2007, starting off at PalmerSport, where he then switched to McLaren GT taking on the role of Powertrain Technician. In 2015 Tom switched to Xtrac where he now works as a Design and Trackside Engineer.

Patrick Coorey - Design Office Manager

Patrick has been race engineering a wide variety of racecars since 1997 working for Audi Sport Australia, Super Nova Racing LTD and then Caterham F1 team. He switched to Formula E in 2014, he race engineered for DS Virgin Racing and then Panasonic Jaguar Racing, where he is now the Design Office Manager.

Will Phillips - Motorsport Safety Advisor

Will has over 30 years experience in motorsport working as a Race Engineer in F1, IndyCar, BTCC, CART, AIMS and WTCR. He now works for his own consultancy, KW Racing as well as acting as a Motorsport Safety Advisor for the FIA Foundation whilst race engineering in WTCR.

Philip Bishop - Technical Lead Motorsport Aerodynamics

Philip began his career at Caterham F1, developing and optimising the aerodynamic package of the team’s F1 cars. In 2014 he moved to Williams Advanced Engineering where he now works, providing CFD, wind tunnel and track testing support for teams racing in LMP1, World Touring Cars and GT.

Ricardo Divila - Race Engineer

Ricardo was one of the most experienced Race Engineers in the world. He competed at 2,600 races including 286 F1 Grand Prix's, 31 Le Mans 24 Hours and 25 IndyCar races. He worked with 171 drivers in total, including the likes of Jenson Button, Mario Andretti and Sebastien Loeb. Ricardo was a great supporter of the MIA School of Race Engineering and generously gave up his time to share his knowledge with the students at the School.
